In The News: How Gompers have succeeded with Scanning Pens

Gompers have seen a huge increase in adult literacy independence since incorporating the ReaderPen into their support strategy in 2019. The well-established organization recently shared their story on Good Evening Arizona and Arizona Fox News.

Gompers are an organization made up of people who are passionate about assisting individuals with disabilities to achieve their highest level of independence and productivity in Arizona, Phoenix. They are on a mission to develop innovative opportunities for people with disabilities. And we’re incredibly proud to have played a part in that for the last year.

The ReaderPen has helped Gompers’ members by allowing them to hear printed text aloud, contributing to literacy independence, comprehension and even their social skills. Members have also utilized the pen’s additional features, including the build-in dictionary, voice recorder and scan-to-file function.

Candice Steel, Assistive Technology Specialist at Gompers, said, “These ReaderPens have opened a new world of independence [for students] helping be more social.

Steel continued, “To gather them all around the table and share that experience of reading and doing a group read where they will either take turns reading one book or they will each have their own book and they’ll read a few lines, pass the pen around, and they’re all listening to the books they’ve chosen to read.”

Jack Churchill, Co-Founder and CEO of Scanning Pens, said, “Gompers have been incredibly vocal about what the ReaderPens have done to assist their people, right from day one. Their feedback, and others like them, have helped us shape the support we provide. Every time we find ourselves featured on a respected news source; it just further reinforces that our hard work is allowing us to deliver reading aid to those that really need it.”

One Gompers member credited the ReaderPen to the reason for her dramatic increase in confidence to work independently, and therefore make her more employable for the future.
